Bighorn River Waterfowl Hunting Report: Strong Bird Production Ahead of Fall
The latest Bighorn River waterfowl hunting report brings encouraging news as spring migration winds down across southeastern Montana. While migratory birds continue moving north, local duck and goose production appears strong throughout the Bighorn River corridor. From healthy mallard broods to growing goose populations, conditions are shaping up well for the upcoming waterfowl season. At River Rock Outfitters, we’re already preparing blinds, equipment, and hunting locations for another year of exceptional Bighorn River waterfowl hunting.
Current Waterfowl Conditions
Recent observations throughout our hunting area indicate excellent bird production this spring. Mallard numbers look particularly promising, with large broods being seen throughout the river system.
In addition to mallards, we’ve observed strong numbers of:
- Wood ducks
- Gadwall
- Wigeon
- Teal
- Mergansers
- Diving ducks
- Cinnamon teal
The occasional cinnamon teal sighting is always a highlight and reflects the diversity of species that utilize the Bighorn River migration corridor.
Goose Production Remains Strong
Goose production has been equally encouraging. Many goslings are already nearing full size, which bodes well for the upcoming season. Healthy local production plays an important role in maintaining quality Bighorn River waterfowl hunting opportunities throughout the fall.
This spring, we were also fortunate to have a pair of Sandhill Cranes nesting near the lodge, adding another memorable wildlife sighting to the season.
Preparing for Another Waterfowl Season
While hunting season is still months away, preparations never stop at River Rock Outfitters. Our team is already hard at work maintaining equipment and improving hunting locations throughout our extensive network.
Current projects include:
- Servicing boats and motors
- Repairing and upgrading jon boats
- Repainting decoys
- Improving hunting blinds
- Expanding hunting access
- Maintaining more than 325 blinds throughout our hunting area
These efforts help ensure every guest enjoys the highest quality Bighorn River waterfowl hunting experience possible.
Looking Ahead to Fall
Based on current information, Montana waterfowl season dates are expected to closely mirror last year’s framework. Hunters should continue monitoring Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks regulations for updates regarding season dates, harvest limits, licensing requirements, and changes involving drone use.
Current bird production and habitat conditions suggest another promising year for Bighorn River waterfowl hunting.
